"Kate really removed herself from society, from NY, from the fashion world, and she really just focused, I think, on being a mom", he told EXTRA in an interview on Wednesday, adding that despite invitations to lavish events like the Met Gala, she chose not to attend.

"Kate was the most attractive woman in the world".

The firestorm of publicity prompted Andy Spade to issue a statement Wednesday to The New York Times to try to set the record straight.

The businessman has now confirmed the rumours, explaining how the couple had been living apart but close to each other and had been co-parenting their daughter Bea.

"She was a great talent who had an immeasurable impact on American fashion and the way the world viewed American accessories", they said.

"There was no indication and no warning that she would do this", he said.

It had been rumored that Kate had been abusing alcohol and other substances, and that her depression worsened over concerns about Frances Valentine.
