It's just one of three albums of unreleased recordings announced for the fall, but it's likely to gain the most attention given its intimate nature and an already fabled reputation among diehard collectors.
A posthumous album from the USA musician Prince has been announced on what would have been his 60th birthday. Called Piano & a Microphone 1983, this will be a collection of solo songs recorded at home by the Purple One, right around the time he was reaching mainstream success with the release of his breakthrough album 1999. Records, has announced the release of Piano & A Microphone 1983, which is also a nod to his final concert tour in 2016.
The recording comes from a rare tape of a private rehearsal made at Prince's home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It also features a cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You", which he performed on piano at First Avenue on August 3, 1983, the night he recorded "Purple Rain" and two other tracks that would wind up on his landmark album.

This much we do know: Friday, June 8 - aka the day after what would have been Prince's 60th birthday - will be Prince Night at Target Field.
Among the songs are "17 Days", Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You", "Strange Relationship", "International Lover" and "Purple Rain", the title song of Prince's 1984 hit movie. The "private rehearsal" took place just before he'd broken through to global stardom and ultimately mirrors his final "Piano & A Microphone Tour" from 2016. Prince released fleshed-out versions of "Purple Rain" and "17 Days" the following year, with "17 Days" acting as the b-side to "When Doves Cry". You can get preview "Mary Don't You Weep" here.
