Argentina have confirmed West Ham playmaker Manuel Lanzini has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and will miss the World Cup. His injury is a blow for Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli who had counted on Lanzini for his starting line up.
The seriousness of the injury also means Lanzini is likely to miss the opening games of the 2018-19 Premier League season.
The 25-year-old will have to show faith in his own ability to make his way back into Argentina's plans for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although his focus now will merely be recovering from a severe injury.

Following Manuel Lanzini's training ground injury on global duty, Inter Milan's talismanic striker Mauro Icardi is being lined up as his replacement for the Argentina squad to travel to Russian Federation this summer for the World Cup.
Lanzini was the man to start in Dybala's space, now the manager has another decision to make. Argentina have been training in Barcelona, home to forward Lionel Messi, before travelling to Russian Federation.
The attacking midfielder caught Sampaoli's eye with five goals in 29 appearances for West Ham last season.
