Germany, France blast Donald Trump over Group of Seven U-turn

Trudeau said Trump's citing of "national security" as a reason for the levies being imposed was "kind of insulting" to Canadian veterans who had stood by their USA allies in conflicts dating back to World War I.

"It would be with regret but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1 applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applies to us", Trudeau said at a press conference closing the summit.

Trudeau had announced that the G7 members - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the US - had agreed upon a joint communiqué, or formal statement, after a hard week on trade issues.

Trump responded to Trudeau's comments, tweeting the United States would not endorse the joint communique from the G7 Summit and accusing Trudeau of making "false statements" about their talks.

He added: "Canadians are polite, we're reasonable but we also will not be pushed around". The document, however, also included a pro-free-trade message at odds with Trump's new tariffs, declaring: "We acknowledge that free, fair and mutually beneficial trade and investment, while creating reciprocal benefits, are key engines for growth and job creation".

Trump said he pushed for the elimination of trade barriers, including subsidies and tariffs, at the G-7 meeting.

Any NAFTA deal will have a sunset provision of some kind, Trump said Saturday, though he indicated some people are pushing against a five-year time frame.
