Aletta, the first hurricane of the 2018 season in the Eastern Pacific Basin, is now moving west-northwest at 6 miles per hour and will not be a threat to any significant landmasses. There is no threat to land.
Hurricane Aletta intensified on Friday to category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, while located 815 km southwest of the port of Manzanillo in Colima state, Mexico's national weather service, National Meteorological Service (SMN), announced. Some additional strengthening is possible through Saturday.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting a near or above normal Atlantic hurricane season for 2018. However, it's encountering a hostile environment that'll allow the storm to rapidly weaken as we roll through Sunday.
Forecasters are also keeping an eye on another area of low pressure to the east of Aletta. It grew from a Tropical Storm to a Category 3 hurricane within 24 hours.
