They will be joined only by translators and will spend a couple of hours before admitting their close advisers to the meeting. Then aides to each were to come in for more discussions and a working lunch.

Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal - which has seen it subjected to several sets of U.N. Security Council sanctions and threatened with military action by the Trump administration - will top the agenda.

"If diplomacy doesn't move in the right direction, sanctions will increase", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says. The president arrived in Asia having blown up relations with USA allies - and personally with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - over trade and Russian Federation, announcing via Twitter en route to Singapore that he'd withdraw from a joint agreement covering climate change and other issues.

Trump will leave Singapore around 8 p.m. Tuesday to return to Washington and will hold a media availability beforehand.

On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up the pace, with USA and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel.

The president planned to stop in Guam and Hawaii on his way back to Washington. Trump on Monday forecast a "nice" outcome, while Kim spent the day out of view.

Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan (Bal-a-krish-nan) says Kim went to the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore on Monday night.

Earlier this morning, the tweeter-in-chief expressed his elation about being in Singapore and feeling "excitement in the air".

Mr Balakrishnan, who met Mr Trump and Mr Kim separately on Sunday evening, told the BBC that both leaders were feeling "supremely confident".

But even the merit of the event itself - long sought by the North, and which Trump apparently impulsively agreed to in March, reportedly without consulting his advisers - has been called into question.

Similarly, Krueger said Trump was unlikely to take the countermeasures lying down and could hit back with more trade restrictions. Well, what he said over the weekend is exactly what he's been saying since the US -imposed tariffs on aluminum and steel.

"The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK (North Korea) and the USA, and thanks to your honest efforts".

Singapore will spend about 20 million dollars to host the historic summit between Trump and Kim, Prime Minister Loong revealed.

It was Kim's only foray on Monday outside of the St. Regis hotel, where he's been staying since his arrival a day earlier.

Kim has shown surprising diplomatic skills in his meetings with overseas leaders this year.

There has been no indication Rodman would be involved in any official talks at the summit, which is aimed at getting North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and missiles in exchange for economic incentives and security guarantees.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but stressed the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

"I think the North will denuclearise ... because it knows it has no other alternatives", he said.

In the weeks leading up to the summit in Singapore, Trump praised Kim as "very honorable" and "very open", a stark contrast from the "Little Rocket Man" moniker Trump had previously bestowed on the North Korean leader.

While fighting a trade war with allies, Trump now brings his America First negotiating style to the deadly topic of North Korea's nuclear weapons. Kim can expect things like hand-cut crystal chandeliers, hand-painted chinoiserie silk wallpapers, 600-threadcount bed linens, paintings by Marc Chagall, a baby grand piano, separate living and dining rooms, an office, gym, and, of course, the hotel's renowned (among rich people) butler service.

The talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know-you session. "That's what I do".
