With nearly all of the vote counted, challenger Katie Arrington leads Rep. Mark Sanford by 4 percentage points (and almost 3,000 votes) in South Carolina's first congressional district.

But Arrington has hammered Sanford for his criticism of President Donald Trump, and she enough GOP voters in the district may agree with her. As voters were heading to the polls Tuesday, the president took a shot at the incumbent congressman. In 2017, Sanford told Politico that Trump had "fanned the flames of intolerance".

President Trump tweeted his endorsement of Katie Arrington roughly three hours before polls closed in SC.

"He's MIA and nothing but trouble", Trump continued.

"It may cost me an election in this case but I stand by every one of those decisions to disagree with the president", Sanford said. "I look forward to working together with him to drain the swamp and continue making America great again". But Trump was definitely a factor in making Sanford the second House Republican in 2018 to lose a primary.

In recent years in Congress, Sanford has drawn ire from chamber-of-commerce Republicans for voting against omnibus spending bills containing money for the Charleston port deepening project - a top priority in his district - because he opposes earmarks. She has served in the Statehouse since 2016. State Sen. Jennifer Wexton is the establishment preference, but veteran Dan Helmer's viral ads - one of which compares the threat Trump poses to Osama bin Laden - have gained some national attention. Nevada, North Dakota, Maine and Virginia also chose candidates for the midterm election on November 6, when Democrats hope to capture a majority of the U.S. Congress. Local, state and national Democrats have called on him to drop out of the race in the deep-red district and said they wouldn't support him if he won.

Trump also tweeted his endorsement of Adam Laxalt, Nevada's attorney general, just after noon Pacific time.

Runoff for SC GOP gubernatorial race; Rep. Smith wins Dem primary

Democrats, meanwhile, could nominate state Rep. Jason Smith, a Joe Biden ally, to take on the Republican victor there.

In the state's Second Congressional District, which includes the Hampton Roads region, Democrat Elaine Luria was the declared victor over rival Karen Mallard with 95 percent of the vote tallied.

The South Carolina congressman's loss in Tuesday's primary was the most stunning outcome on a day that voters in Virginia, Maine, Nevada and North Dakota also went to the polls.

The Senate landscape will become more settled Tuesday night as well. So far, CNN has been unable to project a victor in the Maine House District or either the Democrat or Republican primary for Maine governor.

In Nevada, Democrats are set to nominate Rep. Jacky Rosen to take on Republican Sen.

ME voters are deciding how they'd prefer to veer in their search for the successor to term-limited, conservative Republican Gov. Paul LePage. Mark Sanford, who has held the seat since 2013, trails with 46 percent of the vote.
