How will the games be split up?

"On behalf of our United bid, thank you so, so much for this incredible honour", an emotional U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said on the Congress stage. That isn't set in stone, however.

The final will be held at the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium, which is home to National Football League sides the New York Giants and the New York Jets. Eleven of those locations likely will be chosen, with a decision likely two years away.

Three Canadian cities - Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto - could potentially host matches. The US team is not among the participants. But with the tournament expanding from 32 to 48 teams in 2026, tripling the hosts would not cause as many ripples. The United States staged the tournament in 1994.

There is also a chance to send a seventh team via an inter-continental playoff.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would be glad to see all guests here in Moscow and certainly this concerns the guests from the United States at the highest level", Peskov said, speaking on whether Trump could be invited to Moscow as a guest at the World Cup. In 2010, the US was a finalist to host the 2020 World Cup but lost to Qatar in a vote that was later discredited - but not reversed - because of widespread corruption in FIFA's ranks. FIFA said in May 2017 that the question will be answered by the FIFA Council at a later date, and no decision was made on Wednesday.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Tuesday: "The important thing is that everything has been done correctly".

One of the most immediate and significant implications of Wednesday's result is that Canada's mens national team will play at a World Cup for the first time in nearly four decades, as all three host nations likely qualify automatically for the tournament.

"What can really be the legacy, whether we host matches or are just involved with this in some other grand scheme, that can make sure that Baltimore and the state of Maryland have maximized the potential of being a part of the World Cup?"

In 2002, Japan and South Korea both were granted automatic bids when they co-hosted the World Cup. Canada has never held the competition, but it did host the 2015 Women's World Cup.

So what about the tournament setup?

CONCACAF, whose president - Canadian Victor Montagliani - played a key role in the bid, called the vote a "monumental victory" for the confederation that covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. The only team to have won the finals before are four-time champions Italy, who failed to qualify from UEFA's play-offs after finishing behind Spain in their group.
