The condition of the rescued pilot, who ejected, was not immediately known, the sources added.
The base tweeted: "Around 6.36am this morning, a Kadena F-15C Eagle crashed in the water south of Okinawa". Both pilots on board were able to safely eject and treated for minor injuries.
Military news website Stripes.com, however, reported that the pilot was in "serious condition".
