The condition of the rescued pilot, who ejected, was not immediately known, the sources added.

The base tweeted: "Around 6.36am this morning, a Kadena F-15C Eagle crashed in the water south of Okinawa". Both pilots on board were able to safely eject and treated for minor injuries.

Military news website Stripes.com, however, reported that the pilot was in "serious condition".

A United States military fighter jet has crashed into the sea off Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa. The U.S. military has launched an investigation into the crash.

The incident reportedly occurred some 80 kilometers off the Southern Japanese coast.
