Between hosting the leaders of the world's largest economies at the G7 Summit in Quebec, trying to look commanding in the face of potentially economy-crippling tariffs and serving as Donald Trump's latest punching bag, Justin Trudeau has had a pretty rough weekend.

Earlier on Tuesday at the Washington conference, White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett said the US and Canada need to "take a deep breath".

"On (Trump's) comments, I'm going to stay focused on defending jobs for Canadians and supporting Canadian interests", he said.

Navarro came under scrutiny Sunday for bashing Trudeau after the prime minister criticized Trump in the wake of the G-7 summit held in Canada.

Trudeau said at a news conference Saturday that he was disappointed in the Trump administration's action to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Trump said on Twitter that he would not sign the communique, calling Trudeau "very dishonest & weak" for his trade criticism. "And that's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

There have been reports that Mr. Trump was upset because the President felt that after he had generously agreed to give in on a key Canadian sticking point - the US demand for a sunset clause that would see NAFTA renegotiated after five years - Mr. Trudeau was talking tough.

A day before, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow had also lashed out at Trudeau.

Chris Coons, a Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations, told MSNBC Trump had welcomed authoritarian leaders in other countries even as he "picks fights as he just did at the G7 with our longest, oldest closest allies: democracies, developed Western countries like Canada".

Mr Trump also explained the photo that went viral from the G-7 summit.

"It is something that we have discussed and Canada is certainly prepared for any eventuality", Freeland said.

On 1 June, the United States imposed a 25% tariff for steel and 10% for aluminium on imports from the European Union (EU), Canada, and Mexico.

Navarro had told Fox News on Sunday that there was a "special place in hell" for the Canadian prime minister that "engages in bad-faith diplomacy" with U.S. President Donald Trump.

In reality, the United States has a small surplus with Canada when goods and services are considered - $341.2 billion to Canada's $325.9 billion, according to 2016 statistics from the US trade representative.

Asked if he was apologizing for the comments, Navarro said, "yeah, absolutely".

"When I got out to the plane, I think that Justin probably didn't know that Air Force One has about 20 televisions".
