Some of the boys rescued from a Thai cave seen in hospital in Chiang Rai.

Several boys can be seen in facemasks and hospital gowns, at least one giving a victory sign for the camera.

Fellow British rescuers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton said that Dr Richard "Harry" Harris had a great relationship with the boys while they were trapped in the cave system, the Herald Sun reports.

Seeing his son through the glass, he said he only wanted to hug him. "I want to say thanks for all the support and I want to apologize to the parents".

The rescue, which was just completed on Tuesday, came after 12 members of a boy soccers team and their coach had been trapped in a cave since June 23.

The first video of the Thai boys rescued from a flooded cave after 17 days was released on Wednesday, showing them smiling and waving from their hospital beds, looking thin but fine after an ordeal that has gripped the world.

"The area will become a living museum to show how the operation unfolded", former governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, who led the unsafe rescue mission, told a news conference.

"Some of them were asleep, some of them were wiggling their fingers". With the help of 16 other divers, they ferried the boys and their coach to safety through intense stretches of water.

"The boys got special full-face masks with oxygen circulating all the time. The divers carried them out and they were wearing wetsuits to keep them warm", Thai navy SEAL chief Apakorn Youkongkaew said.

"They and their families won't have the capacity to cope with this kind of thing". He told Reuters it would likely be hard for the boys to deal with the influx of attention from the media, politicians and people looking to financially profit off the ordeal.

When asked if he had a message for Thai kids, he told them not to go into a cave when it's raining, eliciting laughter.

Even UK football club Manchester United got in with the celebrations - and offered the boys a visit to Old Trafford.

The boys seem to be going through progressive stages once they reach the hospital.
