In a December appearance before U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras, Flynn said he'd had conversations with now-former Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak in December 2016, as Trump prepared for the presidency.
As part of Flynn's plea deal, he agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors and his sentencing has been delayed. A Flynn confidant told ABC News that the retired general's legal bills are several million dollars. With the cooperation agreement, it really is up to the government to make that determination, " Kelner said.
Flynn has become an important exhibit for some Trump supporters who argue that the former general was mistreated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of a wide-ranging conspiracy to undermine the president. He pleaded guilty in December to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but his sentencing has been delayed while he aided the Mueller probe.
Attorneys for Michael Flynn said Tuesday that he had not joined a consulting firm as he awaits sentencing and called an announcement from the firm issued hours earlier to the contrary a "misunderstanding". Sullivan said he had some "discomfort" at the thought of preparing a sentencing hearing for someone he had never met before. Apparently dissatisfied with both sides' response, Sullivan directed Flynn to come to court Tuesday.
In a statement about the move, Flynn said he is "excited to begin this new phase of my career". Sullivan agreed a 60-day turnaround would work instead of the more typical 90 days. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan is set to receive a final status report on the case from prosecutors and defense by August 24.
Flynn's December guilty plea to a charge lodged by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the probe into possible ties between Trump 2016 campaign and Russian Federation, was part of a deal for cooperation which allowed him to avoid much more serious charges of acting as an unregistered lobbyist for Turkey and Russian Federation.

The special counsel's office and Flynn have postponed three times so far - not unusual in major investigations - but the June postponement drew heightened scrutiny as the president's legal team weighed whether Trump will sit for an interview with the special counsel's office.
He's one of the first Trump aides to cooperate and the highest ranking official charged in the wide-ranging Russian Federation probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Flynn was a close advisor to Trump during the presidential campaign and was named to lead the white House national security council after Trump won the election.
His plea revealed that he was in touch with senior Trump transition officials before and after his communications with the ambassador.
