Man falls overboard from cruise ship off B.C. coast

The body of a 73-year-old man was recovered Tuesday afternoon.

The Carnival Vista was heading from Miami to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, sailing around the north-eastern corner of Cuba, when the Carnival cruise ship contacted the Coast Guard for medical assistance.

The man was reported to have gone overboard off the balcony of his stateroom at around 4:15 a.m. into USA waters just northwest of the Olympic Peninsula. "Our thoughts are with them in their time of grief".

U.S. Coast Guard officials say a 73-year-old cruise ship passenger who went overboard near the coast of Vancouver Island has died in hospital.

"She was woken by a breeze coming from the balcony door that was cracked open", said petty officer Ali Flockerzi.

The man was reported missing by his wife at about 4:30 a.m. PT this morning, according to the coast guard.

The captain of the Seven Seas Mariner confirmed that ship video shows a passenger going overboard from an 8th deck balcony at 4:15 a.m. The Coast Guard later clarified there was no indication the man jumped.
