Twitter's Purge on Dormant Accounts Swings On "Big Wigs"

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey ended up watching his number of followers drop around 200,000 thanks to the purge.

Twitter bigwigs went to bed On Thursday with millions of followers on Twitter but woke up on Friday with less. From a whopping 62.85 million followers to 55.35 million, Twitter lost 7.5 million (12%) followers in a matter of just a single day.

Twitter said the accounts are locked after the platform detects "sudden changes in account behavior", which includes tweeting out a large number of unsolicited replies, sharing links that are misleading or being blocked by a large number of users that have been mentioned by the account.

Twitter said it expects the initiative to reduce the total follower count on the platform by a significant 6%, the Times reports.

Social blade, a software that helps track social media stats, threw interesting insights into how politicians fared after Twitter's war on fake followers.

Twitter announced recently that it planned to delete accounts that were created by users but may have been taken over by spammers and bots, or what Twitter calls "locked accounts".

The great Twitter purge has begun - and famous users have already lost millions of fake followers.

Perry, who had 110 million followers, now has 107 million, USA Today reported.

Nyakundi's followers have reduced from a whopping 1.2 million to 696,000 while Dela's numbers now stand at 521,000 from an impressive one million.

Meanwhile, Singer Katy Perry, who has the most-followed account on Twitter, lost 1.5 million followers, dropping from 109.61 million to 108.1 million followers.

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's legal, policy, and trust and safety lead, wrote in a post.

The majority of Twitter users will see a reduction of four followers or fewer, but those with larger follower counts will see a bigger drop, the company said.
