My son's meeting with Russian lawyer was legal

The statement that was released Saturday was released by Donald Trump Jr., I'm sure in consultation with his lawyers.

President Donald Trump said Sunday the infamous Trump Tower meeting was about obtaining information on his 2016 presidential opponent, Hillary Clinton.

This is something Trump has said regularly about the Trump Tower meeting, and something he has re-upped now that Michael Cohen is reportedly telling people that Trump did know about it.

Over the weekend, the Washington Post reported that Trump was allegedly anxious about his son getting wrapped up in Robert Mueller's investigation as a result of the Trump Tower meeting.

"The tweet was terrible for Trump and a gift to prosecutors in several respects", Rubin opined.

Trump's personal lawyer Jay Sekulow repeatedly denied that the president was involved in drafting the statement. The veracity of which is challenged by campaign finance law that states it is illegal for a foreign national to "directly or indirectly, make a contribution or a donation of money or other thing of value".

Sekulow's comments came shortly after Trump tweeted earlier Sunday that the meeting was simply an effort "to get information on an opponent", which he characterized as "totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere". She suggested, however, that Trump's supporters in the Republican Party just might choose to defend him if it is proven that his campaign did indeed collude with Russian officials ahead of the 2016 presidential elections.

One part of Mueller's inquiry and congressional investigations has focused on a meeting months before the November election in Trump Tower in NY between Russian officials, Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, and other campaign aides. The President's lawyers had previously offered the special counsel written answers to obstruction questions and limiting the interview to matters before his presidential inauguration, which are largely confined to collusion.

Mr Sekulo told ABC the Trump team had not broken any specific laws in their election campaigning.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in August 2017 said Trump did not personally dictate the statement, but he "offered suggestion like any father would do".

Lawyers described the statement as "short but accurate", according to The Post.

News of the meeting, which Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and top campaign official Paul Manafort also attended, broke in July 2017.

In a January 29, 2018, memo to Mueller, Trump attorneys John Dowd and Sekulow contradicted Sanders by saying Trump did dictate Trump Jr.'s statement.

Sekulow said on Sunday his erroneous denial about Trump's involvement was a mistake based on "bad information".

Sekulow also noted on Sunday that he himself had given a misleading statement a year ago when, on "This Week" and in other media appearances, he said Trump had nothing to do with the misleading statement given to the New York Times.
