Ontario government to announce buck-a-beer plan

The program will see the government-set minimum price of beer drop from $1.25 to $1.00 before tax and deposit.

"For too long, beer consumers have been forced to pay inflated prices for beer in order to increase the profits of bis corporations", Ford said in a previous release.

If you're looking for a cheap brew in Ford's "buck-a-beer" era, head to Prince Edward County, Ont.

Sources told CTV News Toronto on Monday that enticements, including prime shelf space and free advertising, will be offered to those who lower beer prices to $1. However, Mr. Ford said he didn't think the lower prices would lead to more drinking and driving.

The move will have no effect on the province's $589-million in revenue from beer and alcohol taxes, Finance Minister Vic Fedeli said.

The minimum retail price for beer was $1.00 in Ontario from 2005 to 2008.
