Dr Greg Skomal was on the prowl of a research vessel looking to fit a locator tag on a reported shark off the coast of Cape Cod when he was given a shocking up close and personal view of its gaping jaws.

Skomal, the top shark expert in the Bay State, has encountered a number of sharks while working at the Massachusetts Marine Fisheries, a division of the state's Department of Fish & Game.

Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries researcher Dr. Greg Skomal got the shock of his life when a shark almost took a bite out of him as he stood at the bow of a boat outside Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The incident happened off the coast of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, the Facebook post said. As Skomal looks around for the shark, it emerges from the water just beneath the metal pulpit. Just after the pilot says the shark is "right off your bow", the predator leaps toward Skomal.
