Thousands of tourists wait on a beach to be evacuated from the Indonesian island of Lombok after a huge quake.

Aid began reaching isolated areas of the Indonesian island struggling after a powerful natural disaster, while rescuers doubled down on efforts to find the dead, pulling another body from the rubble. The death toll is expected to rise.

Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Wednesday more than 156,003 refugees had been created by the quake, a day after admitting assistance had not reached all because of road closures, and markets and shops standing empty.

"The number of victims keep rising", BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters on Wednesday. Among the many buildings destroyed on Lombok were two homes which housed around 80 underprivileged children.

The epicentre of the quake was in northern Lombok, a more residential, less developed part of the island.

Nugroho said the death toll will increase and that more than 230 people were seriously injured. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia. The Bali Tourism Agency also provided free transportation to different tourist spots, such as Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud. On Lombok, soldiers and other rescuers carried the injured on stretchers and carpets.
