Powerful quake rocks Indonesia's Lombok, Bali islands

A strong natural disaster has again struck the Indonesian resort island of Lombok, killing 82 people.

The shallow seven-magnitude tremor struck just 10 kilometers underground, according to the US Geological Survey, followed by further secondary quakes and almost two dozen aftershocks.

Lombok had already been hit by a 6.4 magnitude quake on July 29 that killed 17 people and briefly stranded several hundred trekkers on the slopes of a volcano.

Lombok is a popular tourist destination east of Bali.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

Sutopo said the death toll had risen to 91 and more than 200 people were seriously injured.

A video of an Indonesian imam stoically reciting evening prayers in Bali as a deadly natural disaster struck neighbouring Lombok has gone viral on social media, with internet users praising him for his unwavering faith.

Videos showed screaming people running in panic from a shopping mall and a neighbourhood in Bali.

"I also instructed all health workers on the island of Lombok to sign in and work to ensure that maximum health care services are provided", Zainul said.
