Everton are expected to announced the signing of Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma on Friday morning, with the Frenchman joining on a season-long loan.

Everton were also linked with a move for out of favour Manchester United star Marcos Rojo, but have not been able to make head way on the deal. After two years of gradual progress within the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge, the player saw his development come to a grinding halt when he sustained a major knee injury.

Zouma spent last season on loan at Stoke City but failed to impress, as the Potters were consigned to relegation down to the Championship.

It might be hard for him to get regular playing time at Chelsea this season, so sending him out on loan makes sense.

Bernard has signed a deal until 2022 at Goodison Park, and revealed the key role played by Toffees boss Marco Silva, telling evertontv: "I chose Everton because of all the things I had heard about Marco Silva and, after speaking to him, I was happy with what he said to me".

Zouma was signed by Mourinho in 2014 when he was the manager of the London based outfit.

Manchester United have thus, opened negotiations with their rivals over a possible move for the 23-year-old, although the Blues are unwilling to sell to a direct rival.

The transfer window for Premier League sides shuts later today, so United will have to act quickly if they are to complete the deal in time.
