Mourinho did confirm that Alexis Sanchez, who was a highlight for United over pre-season, is fit and firing though.

Jose Mourinho has repeatedly expressed his desire to strengthen Manchester United's defence after they finished second in the Premier League last term.

Jose Mourinho has hit out at the perceived negative coverage of his tenure at the helm of Manchester United, stating that he believes finishing runners-up in the Premier League last season is one of the best achievements of his career.

Mourinho revealed this morning he is not expecting anybody to join United before the transfer deadline, with the window shutting at 5pm.

Liverpool have invested heavily over the summer as they look to pose a challenge to last season's runaway champions, Manchester City, but the same can't be said for United.

Sources told ESPN FC on Wednesday that while United were still pursuing a centre-back, but the chase has become problematic during the final hours of the window.

"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today, so is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed", Mourinho said.
