'Suicidal' mechanic steals plane from Seattle airport and crashes

Fighter pilots from the Air National Guard of Washington and OR flew alongside the plane, according to an emailed statement from Gov. Jay Inslee.

The sheriff's office said that "this is not a terrorist incident" and that the pilot was a mechanic from an unknown airline.

Two F-15s pursued the plane but were not involved in the crash, the sheriff said.

The man was a resident of Pierce County, Wash., and "acted alone", the Pierce County Sheriff's Department tweeted. Video showed fiery flames.

According to a tweet from Alaska Airlines, the plane is a Horizon Air Q400.

"We can see evidence of fire on the hillside here on this island", he said in a reporter standup.

She confirmed no other crew or passengers had been on the 76-seater Q400.

"It was unfathomable, it was something out of a movie", he told the newspaper.
