The American film Oscar will be a new nomination Outstanding popular film, according to Vanity Fair.
The Academy said it will trim the duration of the Oscars ceremony by handing out some awards during commercial breaks.
The new film category quickly drew negative attention, with "popular film" becoming a trending topic on Twitter by Wednesday afternoon.
"Change is coming to the Oscars", tweeted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has traditionally put together the glittering awards gala each year in late February or early March. The biggest Academy Awards audience on record came in 1998 when the blockbuster "Titanic" was named best picture.
The Academy is still working out details like what qualifies as "popular". It's an excuse for the Academy to throw highly-acclaimed box office hits into a category that Academy voters know would never get a Best Picture nomination *cough Black Panther cough*. Including past winners that are blockbuster films like Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
