Here are ten films in last ten years that would have surely won the Oscars if the Best Popular Film Category was introduced 10 years back.

The U.S. television audience for the nearly four-hour Oscar ceremony in March 2018 was just 26.5 million viewers, the smallest in the history of the 90 year-old Academy Awards.

The American film Oscar will be a new nomination Outstanding popular film, according to Vanity Fair.

The Academy said it will trim the duration of the Oscars ceremony by handing out some awards during commercial breaks.

The new film category quickly drew negative attention, with "popular film" becoming a trending topic on Twitter by Wednesday afternoon.

"Change is coming to the Oscars", tweeted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has traditionally put together the glittering awards gala each year in late February or early March. The biggest Academy Awards audience on record came in 1998 when the blockbuster "Titanic" was named best picture.

The Academy is still working out details like what qualifies as "popular". It's an excuse for the Academy to throw highly-acclaimed box office hits into a category that Academy voters know would never get a Best Picture nomination *cough Black Panther cough*. Including past winners that are blockbuster films like Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

They had five chances and scored three goals", Wagner told reporters. "We moved the ball well and to have a good bench is always good".

"There's a lot of reasons to believe that would have shaken up the hidebound ideas of what an Oscar movie is", she said.

However, ScreenCrush describes the new category as a "desperate ratings grab" that could hurt films such as Black Panther in the long run.

The award will take effect from 2020 so there will probably be no awards yet although it seems fans are already listing films that are worthy of receiving the award in this category.

"Personally, I think the idea of a Popular Film category is laughable", Zanzie said.

Ratings for the 90th Academy Awards fell to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers, down 19 percent from the previous year and the first time the glitzy awards ceremony had fewer than 30 million viewers since 2008.

Race issues have overshadowed the Oscars for years.
