A year ago, Ward demanded that McCain to resign and for Ducey to appoint her as his replacement. McCain died the next day. Democrats admit Cornett's time in office in one of the state's biggest cities would put up a stronger fight in the fall. Voters participating in Florida's primary will tap nominees for governor, a position that will give the winner's party an advantage in a key political battleground heading into the 2020 presidential campaign.

McSally came the closest to an endorsement from President Trump in the race against two other candidates who had publicly expressed support for the president. DeSantis has the endorsement of President Trump.

McCain's death has highlighted anew the shift in the Republican Party since he captured the GOP nomination for president in 2008.

Arizona is a top pickup opportunity for Senate Democrats in a cycle where they're largely on defense. But Mr Trump won Arizona by less than five points in 2016, and the demographics of the state - which borders Mexico - are trending in favour of Democrats as more Latinos come of voting age. The CNN survey found that 67 percent of Democrats had a favorable opinion of McCain, while just 33 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of the GOP senator.

McCain's death could give Trump even greater leverage over a rightward-tilting Republican party as he fights for his political life against the Russian Federation meddling and obstruction investigations.

Also running for the Senate nomination is former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a controversial immigration hardliner.

The hardcore anti-immigration Arpaio was pardoned past year by Trump after he was convicted of criminal contempt for defying a court order in a racial profiling case. Ward, who also aligned herself to Trump, also claimed that McCain's announcement that he was stopping cancer treatment was timed in order to hurt her chances at winning the primary.

Tributes paid to former presidential candidate John McCain
In 2017, McCain made a key vote in the Senate to reject Trump's effort to overturn Obama's signature health-care plan. President Trump , who has frequently criticized and even mocked the ailing senator, had kind words Saturday.

Will Continue To Work For New NAFTA Deal: Canada
Trump has frequently condemned the 24-year-old NAFTA trade pact as a job-killing "disaster" for American workers. However, his transition team has been taking part in the talks, and gave their blessing to the two-way deal.

Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, who has served three terms and is from Phoenix, also defeated her rival, Deedra Abboud, a progressive activist and attorney from Scottsdale.

In a statement, Arizona Democratic party chairwoman Felecia Rotellini said McSally will "say and do whatever she thinks will get her ahead" and accused her of embracing a "destructive GOP agenda that aims to slash healthcare access, Medicare and social security, education funding, and privacy rights for Arizonans".

Though the general election is still months away, McSally has already blasted Sinema in a TV ad for "protesting us in a pink tutu" rather than serving in the military after 9/11.

Voters elected U.S. Reps.

The primary also is expected to cement a heavyweight Senate matchup in November pitting Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson against two-term Republican Gov. Rick Scott.

Arizona is traditionally a red or Republican state. On the Republican side, DeSantis hopes an endorsement from Trump will outweigh Putnam's attacks on DeSantis as an out-of-touch creature of Washington. Gillum is more liberal, having earned the backing of Vermont Sen. Former congresswoman Gwen Graham, a relatively moderate Democrat and the daughter of former Governor and Senator Bob Graham, holds a slight lead over Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who is backed by Bernie Sanders.

"It's hard to celebrate anything this week as we mourn the loss of Senator McCain", McSally said at her victory party in Tempe.
