Journalist April Ryan argued that progressive candidate Andrew Gillum's upset win in Florida's Democratic gubernatorial primary proves there is a "quiet movement" building on the left.

On Tuesday night, DeSantis defeated Putnam with the help of an endorsement from President Donald Trump.

"I have been really slow to try to think on it because it's too big", he said.

Sanders tweeted his congratulations to Gillum shortly after his victory was announced. "Andrew Gillum has built an unprecedented movement for change in Florida and it's hard to imagine a candidate better equipped to defeat a Trump sycophant like Ron DeSantis this November".

Gillum is the first African American to win the Democratic primary for governor of Florida and if he wins in November, he will join Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Ben Jealous in Maryland, who we are also rooting for in November to be governors of their state.

Gillum campaigned on a platform of Medicare for all and $1 billion dollars of tax money pledged to improve schools. Having been blessed with great success, there is nothing more important for me than investing time and resources in addressing the problems of Florida's most vulnerable. In 2014, he was elected mayor. Two congresswomen are in the running for Flake's seat: Rep. Kyrsten Sinema won the Democratic nod and Rep. Martha McSally is the Republican nominee.

Gillum, a favorite of progressives, spent the least of the five major Democratic candidates and had the smallest television presence.

Tributes paid to former presidential candidate John McCain
In 2017, McCain made a key vote in the Senate to reject Trump's effort to overturn Obama's signature health-care plan. President Trump , who has frequently criticized and even mocked the ailing senator, had kind words Saturday.

On the Republican side, both primary candidates-Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and Congressman Ron DeSantis-opposed adult-use legalization.

Now McSally has to bring together the party - including some of Trump's most devoted supporters - going into the fall against Democrat Krysten Sinema, who is widely considered well-positioned.

He won despite a cloud of uncertainty hovering over city hall as the result of a long-running FBI investigation of possible corruption. Gillum has said he is not a target in the investigation.

After winning the Democratic nomination, Gillum thanked supporters who embraced "our plan for a state that makes room for all of us, not just the well-heeled and the well-connected, but all of us". I'll forever be grateful for this summer spent with my kids traveling across this handsome state, meeting people from all walks of life, sharing ideas, and fighting to create pathways for everyone to thrive.

Gillum didn't ignore President Trump this morning, immediately tweeting back at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - and jabbing directly at Mr. Trump as well. Her challenge now is to unify the GOP base behind her, especially those aligned with Trump and who did not support McCain's frequent criticism of him, while also reaching out to voters in the political center. "He's doing things the way I like", Parke said.

Florida also will host one of the country's top US Senate races between term-limited Republican Governor Rick Scott, who won the Senate nomination against token opposition, and incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. Marco Rubio made a decision to run for re-election after a failed presidential campaign.
