NASA posts incredible video of Hurricane Florence from space

Florence's nighttime winds were down to 110 miles per hour (175 kph) from a high of 140 miles per hour (225 kph), and the Category 3 storm fell to a Category 2, with a further slow weakening expected as the storm nears the coast.

President Trump has declared an emergency in the three states and says the government is "as ready as anybody has ever been".

Forecasters have warned of life-threatening storm surges, catastrophic flooding, damaging winds, and risky rip currents along the coastlines of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. It's estimated that 1 million people will be impacted by Florence's arrival. Life-threatening storm surge and rainfall is expected across portions of North and SC.

"It's now not precisely equal to Hugo, but it without a doubt is forecast to be a serious hurricane making landfall, so in that sense this is seemingly to be adore Hugo", National Climate Service meteorologist Jake Wimberley informed The Charlotte Observer.

"This is going to be a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast", said Jeff Byard, the associate administrator for response and recovery at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "Don't bet your life on riding out a monster", he said.

"The National Hurricane Center forecasts additional strengthening for Florence before it reaches the coastline of North Carolina and SC early Friday, Sept. 14", NASA wrote in the description of the video.

President Donald Trump declared states of emergency for North and SC and Virginia, opening the way for federal aid.

In addition to the dangers the expected deluge of water poses, the hurricane center cautioned, "A few tornadoes are possible in eastern North Carolina beginning late Thursday morning".

The eastbound lanes of several major highways have been shut down to allow for a smooth flow of traffic inland.
