The numbers of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile Virus in southern New Hampshire is on the rise, prompting officials to issue a public health threat declaration for the region. State health officials urge residents and visitors to New Hampshire to protect themselves and their family members by using an effective mosquito repellant that contains 30 percent DEET, wearing long sleeves and trousers at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and removing standing water from around homes to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.

Residents are urged to practice mosquito bite prevention behaviors that can reduce their risk of contracting West Nile virus.

Most human WNV cases occur in Wisconsin during August and September. Symptoms may begin between three to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. "Even though we monitor mosquito activity, conduct larvicide treatments, and fog areas of known activity, this is a reminder that people must be vigilant and take personal measures to keep from being bitten by mosquitoes", said Dick. Such symptoms include, but are not limited to: fever, headache, body ache, fatigue, nausea, and rash. Those with a more severe infection may experience high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and death. Older adults and people with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of severe disease from the virus.

The number of human cases of West Nile virus varies each year.
