"The suspension is for the safety of casino employees, visitors to the city, and residents", said authorities, which faced criticism a year ago after a typhoon that killed nine and caused severe damage.

Typhoon Mangkhut began to lash southern China on Sunday, the latest stop along a destructive path that has left dozens dead and many missing.

In Hong Kong, authorities issued their maximum alert, with residents warned to stay indoors to avoid flying debris.

Most shops and public services are shut, and more than 800 flights have been cancelled at Hong Kong International Airport - affecting more than 100,000 passengers.

The hurtling storm then skirted south of Hong Kong and the neighbouring gambling hub of Macau, before making landfall in China.

Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan told The Associated Press by phone that at the height of the typhoon's onslaught Saturday afternoon, dozens of people, mostly miners and their families, rushed into an old three-storey building in the village of Ucab.

China's state television did not immediately provide details about the two deaths, but they followed reports on social media of people crushed by falling debris in Shenzhen and Dongguan, two cities along the Pearl River near Hong Kong.

Authorities said they believed many of those buried in the landslide were gold miners who'd been working illegally at a mine formerly operated by Benguet Corp., a Philippine mining firm.

Chinese media reported that more than 2.45 million people had been evacuated in mainland Guangdong province.

Hong Kong Security Minister John Lee Ka-chiu (李家超) urged residents to prepare for the worst.

Typhoon Mangkhut hit the Philippines with gale force winds of 200 kph on Saturday, unleashing widespread devastation in which at least 40 people have been killed so far.

Mangkhut landed at 5 p.m. on Sunday on the coast of Jiangmen City in Guangdong province, packing winds up to 162 km per hour, according to the provincial meteorological station.

The rescue work halted for the night before resuming Monday morning.

Fearsome winds caused storm surges as high as three metres in Victoria Harbour, which separates Hong Kong Island from the rest of the city.

Typhoon Mangkhut has displaced many in various Asian countries.

The storm, which was the strongest the world has seen this year, was not as ferocious as feared, though due to the remote areas where the typhoon hit, the full death toll and extent of the destruction is still unknown.

Many residents fled to the north where shelters were set up.

Flooding was more severe in nearby Macau, where 17 people were reported injured and 20,000 households lost power, according to the South China Morning Post.

Lohas Park, a residential estate in the district, saw the windows of many of its units shattered by Mangkhut's strong winds, leaving the flats in a great mess. Cagayan is largely an agricultural province, and authorities fear extensive damage to crops grown there, including rice, corn and bananas.
