Blasey Ford Wants FBI to Investigate Kavanaugh Allegations Before Senate Hearing

Mark Judge, a high school friend of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that he has no memory of an alleged 1982 sexual assault by Kavanaugh and does not want to testify.

The woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault says the FBI should investigate the incident before senators hold a hearing on the allegations.

That's because the real answer is obvious, and it's untenable as a public position: Because if this is delayed until after the midterms, and Republicans lose the Senate, they'd have to confirm the justice in the lame-duck period.

Ford's lawyers said on Tuesday she would not appear before the Senate until after the FBI investigates the allegations.

The committee has invited Ford and Kavanaugh to testify on Monday about the allegation. "She doesn't know how she got there, when it was and so that would logically be something where she would get questions", he said.

"We continue to give her a lot of time".

"We should honour Dr Blasey Ford's wishes and delay this hearing", Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said in a statement to AP.

Mr Grassley's letter states that Prof Ford has until Friday morning to provide the committee with her prepared testimony and biography if she plans to testify next Monday.

Collins said she pressed Kavanaugh on Ford's accusation in a phone call with him last week, "and he was categorical and emphatic in his denial".

"I find that very, well frankly it makes me angry", Guerry said on ABC News' "The Briefing Room".

Standing up for a fair hearing should not just come down to women, said Sen.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing for Monday at which Kavanaugh will testify.

Travel snarled by flooding as Carolinas size up Florence's damage
Power outages in the Southeast also were down, from a high of more than 910,000 to about 310,000, almost all in North Carolina. The state has closed down 334 hog lagoons located in flood plains since Hurricane Floyd in 1999, the group said.

Deadly Typhoon Weakens After Hitting Philippines, China
Residents stand by a flooded road following the onslaught of Typhoon Mangkhut in Tuguegarao city in Cagayan province. More than 2.4 million people had fled in southern China's Guangdong province by Sunday evening, state media said.

However, late on Tuesday Flake and Corker indicated that they would hold a vote next week if Ford declines an invitation from Sen. A substantial delay could push confirmation past the November elections - when Democrats have a shot at winning Senate control - plus allow more time for unforeseen problems to pop up.

Mr Trump reiterated his defense of Judge Kavanaugh, who strongly denies the allegation.

"That the Senate Judiciary Committee still lacks a protocol for vetting sexual harassment and assault claims that surface during a confirmation hearing suggests that the committee has learned little from the Thomas hearing, much less the more recent #MeToo movement", Hill wrote in the op-ed.

The Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee is offering in a letter to lawyers for Brett Kavanaugh's accuser to have his panel's investigators interview her wherever she wants.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., accused Democrats of using their calls for an FBI investigation as a ploy.

"The F.B.I. investigated EXACTLY this sort of thing when Anita Hill alleged she was sexually harassed by Clarence Thomas".

Before Ford asked for an FBI investigation, McConnell and other leaders said they wanted to hear directly from Ford but were standing firm on their expectation that she appear before the committee on Monday, blaming Democrats for creating a disorderly examination of Kavanaugh's record.

Guerry also sought on Wednesday to offer a different picture of the woman who was a girlhood friend saying that she is "strong" and "is holding up as well as can be expected given the circumstances".

Whatever the Federal Bureau of Investigation does, the prospect of criminal charges being filed against Kavanaugh appear very unlikely, legal experts say.

Some Republicans are warning that the Judiciary Committee has to tread lightly and handle the accusations with respect, regardless of their timing.

"As a result of these kind of threats, her family was forced to relocate out of their home".

Back in 1991, however, the FBI did investigate sexual harassment claims against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.
