'Fort Trump': Donald Trump proposes USA military base in Poland

President Donald Trump has said he is considering Poland's request to establish a permanent USA military presence on its soil.

President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda.

As Duda gave his opening remarks and expressed interest in defense projects in conjunction with the US, he proposed the construction of a permanent military base that would be named after Trump.

"I would like to invite the USA president to post more American troops to Poland".

Washington is a key military ally for Warsaw which, fearful of Russian Federation, has been pressing for a permanent U.S. troop presence in Poland.

Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to punish countries if they don't spend enough on defense, said he would only agree if Poland is willing to pay the United States.

Mr Trump, who seemed enticed by the offer, said he deemed the security of Poland "almost as important" to him as it is to the Polish president.

"We are grateful for Poland's leadership on defense spending and burden-sharing in NATO", Trump said.

The US now supplies most of the troops, about 900, for a rotating North Atlantic Treaty Organisation battalion in Poland as part of the alliance response to Russian intervention in Ukraine and Moscow's muscle-flexing along its western borders involving large-scale military exercises.

At one point earlier this year, in a meeting with his advisers, Trump inquired about American troops stationed in Germany and asked about possibly removing them. "But when we're defending immensely wealthy countries and they're not the paying for the defense to the United States, they're only taking advantage of us".

Trump said he agreed with Duda that Moscow had "acted aggressively" in the region and said the request for a base was under consideration.

Poland's President Andrzej Duda asks the U.S. to station more troops in his country and wants to increase the volume of liquefied gas contracts with the United States to cut its dependence on gas imports from Russian Federation.

"I think its a very aggressive situation". We want to modernize Polish armed forces, ' he said.

Polish President Andrzej Duda, eager to secure a commitment, said his country would not only help pay for the facility but name it "Fort Trump". Another concern is setting up a permanent base in Poland would cause a rift among North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members and chip away at alliance unity.
