The app is also very much still closely linked to the mothership, in a way that makes it hard to get the full use out of if you try to break away from the main Facebook app and just keep Messenger on your phone.

What a wild concept that people just want to use Messenger to message their friends and family without rummaging through a clunky UI. The last one is Discover, which will connect you to businesses and games.

Chudnovsky said that 300 million people use stories each day on Facebook and Messenger, but he did not say how many of those people viewed stories specifically within Messenger. The company has also revealed that it is planning to release even more features to Messenger very soon including Dark Mode.

Front and center in the new Messenger interface is a "Chats" tab that offers access to a user's recent conversations in reverse chronological order.

Facebook Messenger Head Davis Marcus tipped this redesign in January, noting that the app had "become too cluttered".

While the earlier versions of Facebook Messenger included a "Discover" tab, Messenger 4 will give more prominence to the area of the app where users can find and communicate with businesses directly. This version will roll out globally over the next few weeks.

The biggest change to Facebook Messenger is the reduction of the amount of tabs within the chat app from nine to three, said Facebook Messenger director of product Loredana Crisan. Facebook has put the new message and camera buttons at the top of the Chats tab, while the People tab gets an Add Friend button.

The new version of Messenger will try to clean up some of that mess. Messenger 4 addresses this by dropping that number down to three. Messenger 4 can personalise your conversations with a small but delightful update to chat customisations called colour gradients. With this feature, you can now use multiple colours to customise your chat bubbles in conversations.

To make that process easier, Facebook says it will be rolling the new Messenger 4 features out over the space of four separate phases.

But it appears Facebook Messenger is hoping to close the gap between itself and WhatsApp by providing users with a reinvigorated design.
