"There's a different perspective now than what I had in the past", Rowland said.

Rowland was sent back to prison twice for parole violations that included possessing pornography and failure to complete therapy.

When they responded and searched the area they found her dead body in the parked vehicle near the south tower of the Medical Plaza. Her mother says she dumped him when she learned about his criminal history.

She was a senior studying communications, "an accomplished student athlete", and star on the school's track and field team, the school said in a statement released Tuesday.

Lauren McCluskey, a track and field athlete for the University of Utah's track and field team, was found shot to death Monday night in a auto outside a campus residence hall.

The 21-year-old university student was killed by her former partner on campus.

The family further states Lauren blocked the man from contacting her and reported to police she was being harassed.

Jill McCluskey, Lauren's mother, said her daughter was "talking to me on the phone" shortly before the murder may have occurred. "She was found inside a auto outside the dorms".

A friend finally told Lauren McCluskey about her boyfriend's criminal history, and the student ended the relationship with Rowland on October 9.

McCluskey was a jumper and pentathlete on the Utah women's track team.

Initial reports of the shooting sparked panic on the Salt Lake City campus.

"This news has shaken not only myself but our entire University of Utah athletics family to its core", school athletic director Mark Harlan said in a separate statement. Police say that Rowland shot McCluskey; authorities say they had recently dated for about a month before McCluskey ended things. The student has not been identified.

Police did not know if Rowland had any association with the church. Police said the man is 37 years old, roughly 6 foot, 3 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray beanie, black trousers, white shoes and a white hoodie.

"Suddenly, I heard her yell, 'No, no, no!'" said Jill McCluskey, describing her last conversation with daughter Lauren. He led police on a chase and was later found "dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound" at a local church, authorities said.

The suspect and the student had "a previous relationship", he said.
