"The relationship between the two countries has deepened since then because the CPEC in 2013 was just an idea. And it has caught the imagination of the people of Pakistan".

"We feel that this is a great opportunity for our country to progress, to attract investment, it gives us an opportunity to raise our standard of living, growth rate".

"What we are hoping is that we do a bit of both, get a loan from the International Monetary Fund and other loans from friendly governments", Mr. Khan said during an investment conference in Riyadh last month.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Imran Khan thanked President Xi for extending warm hospitality to him and his delegation in China.

Pakistan views the CPEC as a great opportunity for development, benefiting the Pakistani people and promoting Pakistan's economic and social advancements.

"China will provide help and assistance within the realm of its capability", said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou after Khan's meeting with the Chinese Premier.

Nevertheless, China insisted it would not let Pakistan down.

The shift in tone on the CPEC projects may indicate that they are a precondition of further Chinese economic aid.

The agreement follows concerns that Islamabad's spiralling financial crisis could lead Beijing to scale back its projects in the country, where it is helping to build the multi-billion dollar CPEC.

The CPEC is a $46 billion-worth infrastructure project funded by China that aims at increasing the region's integrity by connecting the Pakistani port city of Gwadar and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region via transportation routes.

"During the visit, the two sides have made it clear in principle that the Chinese government will provide necessary support and assistance to Pakistan in tiding over the current economic difficulties", Kong said. "As to the specific measures to be taken, the competent authorities of the two countries would have detailed discussions", Kong said.

Pakistan is now battling serious economic crisis including balance of payments.

But although Pakistan is keen to negotiate a bailout to tackle its economic problems, China insists that more talks are needed to finalise the details. "If there were, it would only be to increase, not decrease" the number of projects, he added.

"We are willing to learn from China's development experience, deepen pragmatic cooperation in various fields, and strengthen high-level visits and exchanges at all levels, so as to push the bilateral relations to a higher level", Khan said. "The economic corridor project will certainly boost the local economy of Pakistan as it will create new jobs and inject cash into local communities", Cheng said. "The two sides will firmly move forward the CPEC while ensuring the smooth operation of completing projects and advancing the ongoing projects".
