It reached the edge of Chico, a city of 90,000 people Thursday night.
The Woolsey Fire appeared to be the more risky of the two blazes, and was burning south through the Kanan Road corridor toward Malibu and the ocean.
The two blazes are among 16 now active fires in California.
Reality TV celebrity Kim Kardashian-West, who lives in an area known as Hidden Hills in Los Angeles county, was among those forced to evacuate their homes, People magazine reported.
About 12:30 a.m., all residents in Los Angeles and Ventura counties north of the Ventura 101 Freeway, south of Bell Canyon Road, west of Valley Circle Boulevard and east of Erbes Road, as well as north of Kanan Road, west of Lindero Canyon to Erbes Road extending north to Sunset Hills Boulevard were told to evacuate, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The blaze comes in the wake of the Thousand Oaks shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill on Wednesday night that killed 13 people, including the gunman. At one point, the unrelenting flames burned about 2,000 acres per hour taking down everything - big box stores, homes, and businesses - in its path.
Not too far away, firefighters were also battling the Hill Fire, which broke out along Hill Canyon in Santa Rosa Valley.
High winds and dry vegetation made the fires spread quickly, Ventura County fire officials said, and a red flag warning was in effect until 10 p.m. Friday, promising another day of dry, hot, windy weather.
