Trump elevated Whitaker to the post on Wednesday after forcing out Attorney General Jeff Sessions, installing a Republican Party loyalist to oversee the special counsel investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and the president's 2016 campaign.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's legal team has begun working with the president to craft responses to questions from Mueller's team as part of their investigation, sources close to Trump told ABC.
Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Mark Warner said Thursday on "Your World" that with President Trump's appointment of former Iowa federal prosecutor Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general, the probability of the Mueller probe being tampered with will increase. And though Democrats have called for him to recuse himself because of his past comments, the case is less clear-cut than it was for Sessions - who stepped aside because of his prominent role in Trump's campaign. "Mueller has come up to a red line in the Russian Federation 2016 election-meddling investigation that he is dangerously close to crossing", he thundered.
Trump's running commentary criticizing Sessions and the Justice Department injected more turmoil into an agency that was still reeling from the president's firing of FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Whitaker should recuse himself, given those past comments critical of the scope of Mueller's investigation. "I'd like to know the truth", said Pat Noga, an Emmaus resident.
So no, I will not remember Jeff Sessions as the attorney general who conquered violent crime in America.
Trump told reporters Friday that he didn't speak to Whitaker about the probe.

Prince Charles won't 'meddle' when he becomes king
But I always wonder what meddling is. "That's what makes it so interesting, challenging, and of course, complicated". I mean when we were kids, there was bags and bags and bags of work the office just sent to him.
Whitaker was not hired as Sessions' chief of staff by virtue of any pre-existing relationship with Sessions, but instead because White House officials believed Whitaker's loyalties would lie at the White House and not with the beleaguered attorney general, sources said.
The rest reflects spending by Justice Department components in support of his investigation.
Sessions recused himself from overseeing a probe in March 2017, shortly after taking office.
Mr Whitaker has criticised Mr Mueller's probe.
"There is no mistaking what this means, and what is at stake: this is a constitutionally perilous moment for our country and for the President", Rep. Jerrold Nadler of NY said in a statement. Augusta protesters challenged the legality of Whitaker's appointment by Trump.
Sessions went on to become one of Trump's most prominent surrogates during the campaign and a key member of the Trump transition after the election before being appointed to take the helm of the Justice Department.
The president said he is also looking at "other people" to nominate for the permanent position of Attorney General, and will make a decision in the next few weeks.
"It is imperative that the Administration not impede the Mueller investigation", she tweeted.
