High winds and dry vegetation made the fires spread quickly, Ventura County fire officials said, and a red flag warning was in effect until 10 p.m. Friday, promising another day of dry, hot, windy weather. A scorched vehicle with its doors open sat on the shoulder. There was alarm among some residents who anxious smoke created near the hazardous site could prove particularly risky, but authorities from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control who oversee the site say there is no evidence that smoke from the area around the SSFL is any more unsafe than other wildfire smoke.
