A fierce wildfire is burning through Southern California's upscale beach resort of Malibu - home to many Hollywood stars - destroying buildings and forcing residents to flee.

There were no signs of life Friday on the road to Paradise except for the occasional bird chirp.

High winds and dry vegetation made the fires spread quickly, Ventura County fire officials said, and a red flag warning was in effect until 10 p.m. Friday, promising another day of dry, hot, windy weather. A scorched vehicle with its doors open sat on the shoulder. There was alarm among some residents who anxious smoke created near the hazardous site could prove particularly risky, but authorities from the California Department of Toxic Substances Control who oversee the site say there is no evidence that smoke from the area around the SSFL is any more unsafe than other wildfire smoke.

The video resembles nothing more than a terrifying escape from Hell.

By Friday morning, some 75,000 homes across Ventura and Los Angeles counties - and extending as far south as the city of Malibu - were already under evacuation orders. Residents awoke to the stench of smoke and the morning horizon drenched in an ashen-orange that was hard to see or drive through, hindering evacuations. Some crashed and others left their vehicles by the roadside. Her father, a lineman for Pacific Gas and Electric Company, was called in from another district to help shut down power, she said.
