The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump has told advisers he has chose to remove Nielsen and that he wants her out as soon as possible, citing five current and former White House officials.

Ricardel was still in the White House Tuesday, the Journal reported.

Politico also reports that Ricardel may also be responsible for a breakdown in communication between the Pentagon and NSC because she has a less than rosy relationship with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

She pushed Trump's immigration policies, including funding for his border wall and defended the administration's practice of separating children from parents, telling a Senate committee that removing children from parents facing criminal charges happens "in the United States every day".

A White House official accused Ricardel of being dishonest about the feud and subsequently leaking stories to try to cover her behavior. But a much larger White House exodus is being planned, reportedly including Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and Chief of Staff John Kelly.

He reportedly claims she's too loyal to the former president despite her defending Trump's stance on separating families at the border.

Nielsen's colleagues said she was unhappy in her role for several months, and Trump has expressed interest in considering candidates to replace her, The Post reported.

"It's been frayed for a long time", the source said, cautioning Trump could again change his mind on the matter. One is that Melania Trump is so annoyed and angry with this woman that she wanted to call her out publicly and make her look bad, and/or two...

Mr Trump has changed his mind on key personnel decisions before and Chief of Staff John Kelly is fighting Ms Nielsen's pending dismissal and attempting to postpone it, aides say.

While Nancy Reagan was reportedly influential in the ouster of former President Ronald Reagan's chief of staff, Donald T. Regan, in 1987, she did so behind the scenes.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on Ms Nielsen's potential departure.

"If I were advising the White House I'd encourage them to nominate someone with executive branch experience", said one senior DHS official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share candid views about his agency's leadership. She had a prominent place standing to Trump's right on Tuesday at a White House ceremony in the Roosevelt Room marking Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

Kelly has been protective of Nielsen, who he has worked with for many years.
