The Handmaid's Tale author Margaret Atwood announced on Twitter Wednesday that rumors of a sequel to her bestselling novel turned Emmy-winning TV show are true.

The Testaments is set 15 years after the main character Offred's final scene in The Handmaid's Tale. "Everything you've ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book".

She also revealed that the new book was inspired by the current world we live in and will feature narration from three different female characters.

Publisher McClelland and Stewart says it will publish The Testaments on September 10, 2019.

The Handmaid's Tale has sold more than 8 million copies since it was first published.

Atwood's depiction of a violently misogynist society has resonated with a new generation of readers since the election of Donald Trump and the TV adaptation of the novel, which began airing in 2017.

Margaret Atwood's 'The Handmaid's Tale' Is Getting A Sequel

The Handmaid's Tale has made waves thanks to its successful adaptation on Hulu, but the original book was published back in 1985, so fans are definitely intrigued to see how the world has changed in that 15-year gap. Abortion rights activists dressed in red cloaks and white bonnets have marched in Washington and in state capitol buildings around the country.

Said Talese, "I have published Margaret Atwood's work since 1976 - her poetry, fiction and nonfiction". "The form was strewn with pitfalls, among them a tendency to sermonise, a veering into allegory and a lack of plausibility".

Becky Hardie, deputy publishing director of United Kingdom publishers Chatto & Windus, said: "As a society, we've never needed Margaret Atwood more".

In other words, she must believe there's plenty of material in the age of Trump for another book.

Whatever happens, readers are likely hoping that The Testaments sheds some light on The Handmaid's Tale's ambiguous ending, where Offred is taken away by Gilead's secret police (though there are hints the arrest might actually be part of a plan to smuggle her out of Gilead and into Canada).

Atwood, 79, won the Booker Prize in 2000 for The Blind Assassin. "Well, nearly everything!" she teased.
