Candidates to Replace Mike McCarthy as Packers Head Coach

The Green Bay Packers have fired head coach Mike McCarthy, the team announced on Sunday.

A December game against a warm-weather team with snow falling usually means an automatic victory for the Packers.

Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was named interim head coach.

Philibin now will oversee the disappointing Packers for the remaining four games on their schedule.

In a game the Green Bay Packers had to win, they didn't even look interested. Fingers have been pointed at longtime head coach Mike McCarthy throughout the season as it seems the right plays are simply not being called.

As for McCarthy, we don't know what the immediate future will hold.

"This was a game that we have won in the past, expected to win", said Rodgers, who threw for 233 yards on 31 completions.

McCarthy won't get that chance. Under McCarthy, Green Bay went 125-77-2. And McCarthy's offense didn't avoid their "unfortunate, typical lull", as Rodgers said a week after the Packers' loss at Minnesota.

The timing is a little curious because the Packers are essentially out of the playoffs at 4-7-1. Rodgers and McCarthy reportedly had been at odds for some time, but certainly the losing helped raise the tension. However, given the Packers' lack of success and the lofty line, it's the Cardinals who are actually getting 51% of bets and almost 65% of dollars (check out the updated betting data here).

Clay Matthews and Davante Adams each briefly left the game with injuries, but this is a loss that McCarthy could not live down. They have struggled all season behind a rookie quarterback with a very depleted defense compared to what it was just a few seasons ago.

This year, Rodgers hurt his left knee in the season opener, though he is feeling better now.

Philbin has previously been head coach of the Miami Dolphins and is in his second stint coaching with the Packers, serving as the teams OC from 2007-2011 before taking the job in Miami. But this was supposed to be the beginning of a much more comfortable end to the season.
