Child killed when football team's bus crashes in Arkansas

The bus was traveling from Texas to Memphis, Tennessee when the deadly accident occurred around 2:40 a.m. near exit 111 along Interstate 30 eastbound.

"On behalf of all Memphians, our hearts and prayers go out to the Orange Mound children and their families involved in this morning's tragic bus accident in Arkansas", Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement.

One child is dead and at least 45 other individuals (updated from release of 5:47 AM), a lot of them children, are reported to be injured, as the result of the crash.

One child was killed in the crash.

The children were between 8 and 10 years old and had chaperones accompanying them on the bus, state police spokesman Bill Sadler said. By the time first responders arrived numerous players -who were between the ages of eight and 13 years old - and their chaperones were already off the bus, state police spokesman Bill Sadler stated.

Arkansas Children's Hospital received 26 patients, 22 of whom had been released by late Monday afternoon, officials said.

The bus was returning to Memphis Tennessee from a championship game in Dallas Texas when it crashed west of Benton Arkansas the state police said

Arkansas State Police said the bus crashed along Interstate 30 near Benton, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Little Rock.

The charter bus was carrying a Memphis youth football team. A coach told another local station, NBC affiliate WMC, that the bus rolled over four times.

Saline Memorial Hospital admitted 13 injured adults and children, spokeswoman Rebecca Jones said. No information about the severity of the injuries was immediately available.

Hailey said there were seat belts on the bus, but he didn't know how many people were wearing them.

The elementary-school age players from Orange Mound Youth Association in southeast Memphis were returning home after playing in a tournament in Keller over the weekend. The bus crashed into an oncoming tractor-trailer truck. Prosecutors said the driver was on the phone at the time of the crash.
