Sources are indicating US President Donald Trump has made the previously-hinted-at decision to replace retiring United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley with foreign-policy newcomer Heather Nauert.

Nauert has been on the short list for ambassador to the United Nations since Haley announced that she was stepping down from her post in October. Nauert was then appointed acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs and was for a time the highest-ranking woman and fourth highest-ranking official in the building.

Nauert was formerly a co-host on morning cable news show "Fox & Friends" as well as a correspondent for CBS News.

"I expect to continue to speak out from time to time on important public policy matters, but I will surely not be a candidate for any office in 2020", she wrote.

Requests for comment to the state department and the White House were not immediately returned.

"She's excellent, she's been with us a long time, she's been a supporter for a long time", Trump told reporters on November 1.

Bloomberg said Ms Nauert would be an unorthodox choice, given the little experience she had in government or foreign policy before she took up the role at the state department.
