China Promotes Plans for January Meeting with U.S.

After returning from his Buenos Aires meeting with Xi, Trump said U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would be in charge of the China negotiations.

For months, the USA and China have engaged in tit-for-tat increases in tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of exports flowing between the two countries. Gao guaranteed that the United States and China have made specific arrangements for face-to-face consultations on January in addition to intensive telephone consultations.

The January meeting will be the first time the two sides have held face-to-face discussions since President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to a 90-day truce during da meeting in Argentina.

Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng confirmed in a regular briefing Thursday in Beijing that the two sides planned to sit down for talks next month.

Mr Trump and Mr Xi agreed to stop escalating tit-for-tat tariffs that have disrupted the flow of hundreds of billions of dollars of goods between the two nations. The two leaders also agreed to launch new talks while the United States delayed a planned January 1 tariff increase until March 2.

Since then, China has cut tariffs on vehicles imported from the U.S., resumed the purchase of soya from the North American country and submitted a draft law to prohibit forced technology transfers. Another source told Reuters that talks were likely in early January.

Representatives from China and the U.S. are planning to meet in January to negotiate an agreement on putting an end to the trade war between the two countries, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said on Thursday. The unified list is seen as an effort to address concerns from Western investors that there is no level playing field in China.

A day later, Beijing unveiled a draft of a foreign investment law for public consultation, which proposes a ban on forced technology transfer and illegal government "interference" in foreign business operations - practices that have come under the spotlight during the trade war.
