If you've played either of the Project Cars games, you'll know their developer Slightly Mad Studios knows how to make shiny, top-end visuals in video games.

The name is reportedly an acronym of "Media Arts Development Box", and/or a contraction of the "Madness Engine" that Slightly Mad Studios uses to make its games.

Speaking to Variety Bell elaborated, with the rather disappointing revelation that the console is planned to ship in around three years' time.

There's no release date for the Mad Box as of yet, other than a vague "three year" timeline, which would see the Mad Box released a year or so into the life cycle of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

The Mad Box will also aim to support major VR headsets, and the specs will be equivalent to a "very fast PC 2 years from now".

Following the introduction of Microsoft's Xbox in 2001, the game console landscape hasn't seen much change in way of new competition.

Overwhelmed with specificity, I find myself fairly confident this Mad Box is not actually going to shake the gaming industry to its core in 2021, or if it ever arrives at all.

Bell's Twitter account, which was created earlier this morning, initially tweeted "The Mad Box is coming". Additionally, he says that The Mad Box offers developers access to a full and free engine to develop games with as well, both for this and other platforms.

Slightly Mad Studios may be just that. Bell did mention the designs have been "specced out in detail", so some thought has been put into the console beyond the basics. It's literally "Mad"... You want 4k, you want VR at 60FPS?

According to the CEO, the console will be a "worldwide console" that will be competitive with upcoming console prices. The London-based gaming company has been in existence since 2009, and its team was behind the award-winning Project CARS franchise.

Do you think Slightly Mad has what it takes to compete with the likes of PlayStation 5 and "Xbox Two"?

As for funding this venture, Bell stated that Slight Mad is in talks with several interested parties.
