The Buckeyes will be replacing Schiano with former MI defensive line coach Greg Mattison and former San Fransico 49ers assistant Jeff Hafley.

The Buckeyes recently lost co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch to Oklahoma. The pair will serve as co-defensive coordinators. Ohio State University announced Monday that they've hired 49ers defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley as their co-defensive coordinator.

Schiano was not mentioned in the team's release.

In another shake up on the defensive coaching staff, Day has promoted defensive line coach Larry Johnson to associate head coach.

Hafley was also the 49ers' defensive backs coach under Chip Kelly, which is where the connection is between him and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. And though there have been no recent reports linking him to a job with the Patriots, his relationship with head coach Bill Belichick would make him a natural fit.
