The Toronto Raptors are signing free-agent guard Patrick McCaw for the rest of the season, league sources told ESPN. He began the season under control by the Golden State Warriors but was signed by the Cavaliers to a two-year, $6 million non-guaranteed offer sheet on December 28.

National Basketball Association officials will speak to Patrick McCaw's representatives Thursday, as the league begins an investigation centered on McCaw and the Cavaliers, according to Mark Medina of the San Jose Mercury News. The NBA had examined the two-year, $6 million offer sheet closely prior to approving it, league sources said, but found no reason to disallow it.

McCaw was sidelined for nearly two months with a bone bruise in his lower back near the end of last season after a horrific fall during a game at Sacramento. It appears possible that the Cavs had no intention of keeping McCaw, and signed him to an offer sheet that they knew the Warriors would not match, with the intention of waiving him. McCaw, 23, was an early-season holdout following two years with the Golden State Warriors.
