Jayme Closs, 13, was missing after her parents were found dead in their home in Barron, Wisconsin, on October 15, 2018. Jayme was believed to be home when they were killed, but she was gone when authorities arrived.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office confirms that Barron County missing person JAYME CLOSS was located alive in the Town of Gordon in Douglas County at 4:43pm and a suspect was taken into custody at 4:54pm, also in the Town of Gordon.
Gordon lies about 40 miles south of Lake Superior and about 65 miles north of Barron, Jayme's hometown. She had been missing for almost three months.
"I have a gut feeling she's still alive", Fitzgerald said. "I just can't wait". "We heard voices but we can't make out what was said", Fitzgerald told Fox News in November.
On the sheriff department's Facebook page later on Thursday evening, Fitzgerald wrote that Closs would be reunited with her family that night.
Authorities say a suspect is in custody, but say they won't release any more information ahead of a news conference Friday.
The disappearance gained nationwide attention in the U.S., and a Facebook group called "Abducted - Find Jayme Closs" was set up to aid the search. The town is home to about 645 people in a heavily forested region where logging is the top industry.
Barron Mayor Ron Fladten said Thursday night he was overjoyed at learning she is alive.
Robert Naiberg said that nothing seemed amiss at the gathering, and that Jayme was "quiet as always".
"I have never seen this many police or emergency people all in one spot", said Krabbenhoft. It's just a great result we got tonight. And as the mystery of her disappearance stretched past the fall and into the Christmas holiday, Jayme Closs's neighbors, classmates and family in Barron held vigil, wrapping a community tree in green and blue lights: green for hope, blue for grief. "She's no doubt been through just a bad ordeal. I thought today was going to be the day, and then I find out two hours later that she's found and I just can not believe this".
Earlier Thursday afternoon, Fitzgerald took to Facebook to dispel a rumor that Jayme had been found in Walworth County, where a large police presence related to a separate criminal investigation was being live-streamed by local media.
