Upon further investigation, and ear, nose, and throat specialist at Qianpu Hospital told Ms. Chen (the patient has only been identified by her last name) she was suffering from reverse-slope hearing loss, a form of low-frequency hearing loss.
An ENT specialist eventually determined she had reverse-slop hearing loss, which prevents her from hearing deeper sounds.

Chen reportedly said she has recently been under a lot of stress and not getting an adequate amount of sleep, which Xiaoqing said could have been a contributing factor. This explains why hearing loss more often affects our ability to hear higher-pitched sounds than lower-pitched ones, she said. It's not just male voices they struggle with but any particularly low sound, including voices over the phone, the hum of a vehicle, and thunder.
What do you think about this odd form of hearing loss?
High-frequency hearing loss is much more common and generally means people struggle to, or can't hear the voices of women and children.
The extremely unusual condition, which reportedly affects only about 3,000 people in the United States of America and Canada, causes patients to lose their ability to hear low-frequency sounds, including average male voices. This can put sufferers in danger, as they may not hear noises like oncoming cars.
Reverse-slope hearing loss caused a Chinese woman to only hear female voices. This can be caused by general anesthetic, a perilymphatic fistula (an abnormal opening in the ear), and intracranial hypertension, caused by pressure in the central nervous system.
