Study finds women's brains appear to be three years younger than men's

According to Dr. Manu Goyal, an assistant professor of radiology and neurology at the centre, "Females had a younger brain age relative to males".

Using this as a baseline, the researchers asked the algorithm to estimate the ages of the women based exclusively on their brain metabolism data.

The team found that women's brains appeared to be three years younger metabolically-known as neotenous-on average than men. Women consistently fared better. The researchers put data from the scans that showed how the brain uses oxygen and glucose into a computer model that was created to estimate the metabolic age of individuals' brains. Different Brain Age The human brain changes and deteriorate with age.

The team initially hoped to use the metabolic information to predict a person's age.

For the new study, the researchers analyzed PET scans of 205 adults, all cognitively normal. "This might mean women are a little bit more resilient to certain aspects of brain aging in general, but it could also introduce certain vulnerabilities".

Scientists have just found a new distinction between the brains of the two sexes: age-related changes to the brain occur more slowly in women than in men. And Goyal says the group puzzled whether or not this distinction was extra pronounced in males or females. Doing it this way, the algorithm reported that the men's brains were about 2.4 years older than their actual chronological ages.

"Despite this relative brain youthfulness, however, women are at higher risk for developing Alzheimer's than men", Devi continued. But it's still not clear why. It calculated that the women were, on average, 3.8 years younger than they actually were.

Scientists have seen a variety of sex differences in the brain, including stress response, some gene expression and disease. Brain cells metabolize glucose to produce the energy needed to maintain synaptic functions and perform other cellular tasks. It's associated with brain development, increasing in sync with synaptic formation and growth.

JON HAMILTON, BYLINE: A person in their 60s may have the body of someone much younger. That's one of the main takeaways of a new study out of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

A group of researchers from the United States took specialist brain scans from almost 200 healthy adults aged between 20 and 80.

The researchers used positron emission tomography (PET) scans, which produce detailed images that show how the brain is working.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal PNAS and is freely available to read online.

"Brain metabolism might help us understand some of the differences we see between men and women as they age", Goyal said.

Even so, for some individuals, there was a giant distinction between their mind age and their chronological age. Female's brains appeared about four years youthful, commonly.

The researchers suspect that women gain this advantage during puberty, Goyal said. But Roberta Diaz Brinton, who studies brain aging at the University of Arizona, has a more optimistic take on the results.

BRINTON: This is a process that starts very early in the aging process in some women, and we can intervene. They embody eating regimen, exercise and drugs that assist the mind and physique metabolize sugar.
