The question now centres on whether Nissan will maintain its current workforce of 7,000 workers in the United Kingdom, where it manufactures its Qashqai, Juke, and Leaf models.

Nissan, which has made cars at Sunderland since 1986, said plummeting diesel vehicle sales were also a factor in its decision, which was expected to have created an additional 700 jobs at Sunderland.

In October 2016, Nissan said it would build both the new Qashqai and the X-Trail SUV at its Sunderland plant, following government "support and assurances".

Nissan recently has confirmed that its new X-trail which was actually planned for the sunderland plant for it is now going to be made in Japan.

The Department for International Trade said its priority was to ensure there was no disruption to UK-Japanese trade after Brexit, but that it would then seek to go further than the deal signed by Brussels.

The FT quoted from a letter sent by business minister Greg Clark to then-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn in which he promises to protect the vehicle sector as Britain leaves the European Union.

The continued uncertainty over Brexit "is not helping companies like ours to plan for the future", said Nissan Europe Chairman Gianluca de Ficchy. Nissan's executive vice president for manufacturing and supply change management, Hideyuki Sakamoto, pointed out that: "A model like X-Trail is manufactured in multiple locations globally and can therefore be re-evaluated based on changes to the business environment".

BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May said on Sunday she would be "armed with a fresh mandate and new ideas" when she next meets European Union negotiators over her Brexit deal.

Following the announcement, Clark said it would be "a blow to the (country's automotive) sector and the region".

Investment for emissions regulations, reduced sales forecasts and Brexit uncertainty were cited as reasons for the decision.

Union representatives met Nissan representatives on Monday and said they would push to secure the future of the site.

In November 2016, Ghosn had told Business Insider that he needed "to be reassured on the competitiveness" of post-Brexit Britain, but declined at the time to say whether the company had been offered anything to keep the factory open.
