In the op-ed, he recalled how legislation like the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act ― all laws he helped pass ― transformed the US during his time in office.

"One of the advantages to knowing that your demise is imminent, and that reports of it will not be greatly exaggerated, is that you have a few moments to compose some parting thoughts", Dingell said Thursday. She was absent during President Donald Trump's State of the Union address in Washington, DC, on Tuesday evening.

Dingell Jr. died at the age 92. Debbie Dingell, herself a former auto industry lobbyist.

Dingell revealed her husband spoke with former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton in his final 24 hours. Both events will be open to the public.

"I've gotten more death threats around here than I can remember", Dingell told The Associated Press in a 1995 interview. Dingell, a World War II-era Army veteran, will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Unable to sway a handful of Democrats who opposed mandating universal coverage - and unwilling to compromise on that point - Dingell notified the House speaker, Thomas Foley, that he couldn't muster the votes to produce legislation. The Detroit News reported members of Congress remembered the Democrat on the House floor.
